Who am I?
Second youngest of nine children and the youngest son is a blessing. As my older siblings were testing the waters of maturity I observed and learned at a young age what my parents expected from us. As I did not enjoy disciplinary actions I would be conscientious. At this moment I must thank my older siblings for their wrong doings in which was a lesson for me of how not to get caught.:) Lucky for me I also learned what not to do as an adult. Both my grandfathers, my father’s mother, my father and mother, two of my dad’s brother’s had hardening of the arteries and consequently heart disease. Both my grandfathers died coincidently at the age of 52, my uncles at the age of 36, my dad’s health problems started with a major heart attack at the age of 45, followed by a total of 13 heart attacks, 3 strokes, a hip replacement, a new knee cap, a replaced leg artery and years of stomach problems; my mother had 3 heart attacks followed by several small strokes until one eventually succumbed her till the grim reaper stole her away during one fall evening at the age of 79. Back then I observed and heard how smoking, drinking, lack of exercise and certain foods were the culprit. So I neither drank or smoke, worked out and ate healthy. My older siblings ignored this way of life but at the age of 36 I took a major heart attack that lucky for my wife whom drove me with three children during a tornado touchdown at 5:30 a.m. August 24, 1993 to the hospital which was a half hour from our home. I managed to walk into the emergency who were waiting for my arrival and collapsed. I don’t remember anything till I awoke 28 hours later in ICU. I saw my lovely family but struggled to remember their names. So much for the way of life I thought I should live. And to think I deprived myself of all those years of celebration as my siblings did, especially my brother who I now envied for throwing caution into the wind as he became an expert at celebrating and enjoying his youth with his peers. I quickly learned that I had the same type of heart attack as my uncles who predeceased before their time. I was lucky. I remember three weeks after that horrific morning while recuperating in ICU my body experienced a stroke down the left side. Going to Ottawa, Ontario, our nations capital to have an angiography only to find out that the blockage in my heart was an inch long and 100% blocked… No angioplasty for me and no by-pass. The cardiologist said that over time my heart would make a natural by-pass. What he didn’t tell me was my quality of life would not improve and so I did not enjoy life during the next 13 years until I began to breath like a freight train loaded with iron ore going uphill. Back to the doctor to complain only to be sent for a nuclear-cardiology stress test and to be admitted to hospital for a possible angioplasty, which turned into a quadruple by-pass. Fifteen months later the freight train breathing started again but this time I ended up taking a heart attack only to have a double stent put into that blocked artery that happened 15 years previously. Since then I can breath and enjoy life once more. If I had only known 15 years ago I could have went to the good U.S.A and had a single by-pass then my quality of life would have been more enjoyable and memorable. The doctors told me that food would only have a 20% effect on my lifestyle, the other 80% had to do with genetics. Hind site is 20-20 and I am still young but wiser. Now I don’t trust the medical profession 100% and looking for answers all the time. I believe that diet can play a larger role than doctors think. I know that certain foods has an affect on my well being. I notice that fiber, nuts and fruits play an important part on how I feel from day to day.
